What You Should Know

  • ATMs are widely available throughout France (large cities, towns, airports) and are typically found outside or inside bank branches or post offices.
  • French ATMs generally accept Visa and Mastercard cards (including non-French issued ones) via networks like PLUS, Cirrus.
  • Make sure your card supports chip-and-PIN (most do) and that you notify your home bank of your travel to avoid your card being blocked.
  • Choose to withdraw in the local currency (Euros, EUR) rather than letting the machine convert into your home currency: this avoids poor conversion rates or added hidden fees.
  • Some independent / non-bank ATMs (often in tourist areas) may carry extra fees. Opt for ATMs affiliated with major banks for better reliability and lower cost.

How dogpay Can Help

While dogpay is not an ATM provider, using it can give you additional flexibility and cost control around your travel funds:

  • If you hold funds in another currency (USD, GBP etc.), you can use dogpay ahead of your trip to convert or transfer funds into euros (EUR), so you’re less dependent on withdrawing cash on the spot in France when rates/fees might be worse.
  • For smaller or unexpected costs (local transport, extra purchases, emergencies) you might have to rely on cash—having dogpay as a backup means you’re not limited to frequent ATM withdrawals with uncertain charges.
  • If you manage multiple currencies and want more control over when you convert, or want to avoid repeated conversions (which can add hidden cost), dogpay can assist in planning and reducing those extra losses.

Quick Checklist

  • Notify your bank you’re travelling to France.
  • Confirm your card works internationally and supports chip-and-PIN.
  • Withdraw from a well-known bank’s ATM (not a random tourist kiosk).
  • Ensure the machine dispenses in euros (EUR), not your home currency.
  • Consider pre-converting/setting funds via dogpay so you don’t rely entirely on cash withdrawals abroad.
