Social Security Number (SSN) is a 9-digit identifier issued by the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). It’s essential for working legally, filing taxes, opening certain accounts, and accessing many services.

1. Who is eligible?

You can apply for a SSN if you:

  • Are a U.S. citizen, or
  • Are a noncitizen with work authorization (e.g. on a visa or employment permit)
  • Need one for a valid reason (e.g. to work, pay taxes)

2. Documents & form needed

You must submit Form SS-5 (Application for Social Security Card)  and provide original or certified documentsproving:

  • Identity and age (e.g. passport, birth certificate)
  • Immigration / work status (e.g. visa, I-94, employment authorization)

Photocopies or notarized copies typically aren’t accepted.

3. Where & how to apply

  • In person: You must go to your local SSA office with SS-5 and supporting documents.
  • Via USCIS combined application: If you’re applying for work authorization (Form I-765), you may request a SSN card simultaneously when filing I-765. If approved, SSA issues the SSN card and mails it to you.

If you live abroad, you can contact the U.S. embassy / consulate or the Federal Benefits Unit to request how to apply.

4. Timing & delivery

After approval, the SSA typically mails your SSN card to your U.S. mailing address within a few weeks.

If you requested SSN via the I-765 and it’s approved, SSA aims to mail the SSN card within about 7 business days after you get your employment authorization document (EAD).
