What Is a Certificate of Citizenship?
A Certificate of Citizenship is an official document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that serves as proof of U.S. citizenship for individuals who acquired or derived citizenship through their parent(s), rather than by naturalization.
It does not itself grant citizenship, but verifies a status that already exists under law.
This certificate is different from a Certificate of Naturalization, which is granted to immigrants who completed the naturalization process.
Who Is Eligible & How to Apply
You may qualify for a Certificate of Citizenship if:
- You were born abroad to at least one U.S. citizen parent and meet physical presence / residence requirements.
- You derived citizenship automatically (for example, your parent naturalized before you turned 18).
- You were adopted by U.S. citizens before a certain age under specified rules.
To apply, you file Form N-600 (Application for Certificate of Citizenship) with USCIS.
You’ll need to submit supporting documents such as:
- Your birth certificate and proof of your parent’s U.S. citizenship
- Proof of your parent(s) residing in the U.S. for required periods
- Evidence of lawful permanent residence (green card)
- Other identity / name change / adoption documents as applicable
Once approved, USCIS issues the certificate.
You can also file to replace the certificate (in case of loss, damage, or theft) using Form N-565.
Uses & Importance of the Certificate
The Certificate of Citizenship is often used to:
- Apply for a U.S. passport when birth certificate is insufficient
- Prove citizenship in immigration or legal situations
- Sponsor relatives or provide evidence in benefit or employment contexts
- Strengthen identity documentation when citizenship by birth abroad needs formal proof
