1. Eligibility Paths for Brazilian Citizenship

By Birth (Jus Soli/Jus Sanguinis)

  • Born in Brazil (except diplomats’ children) grants automatic citizenship. Neo-brazilians born abroad to Brazilian parents can also acquire nationality through registration or residing in Brazil after turning 18.

By Naturalization (Ordinary Path)

  • Standard route: 4 years of continuous legal residence, Portuguese proficiency, clean criminal record.
  • Accelerated route (1 year): if married to a Brazilian, have Brazilian child, from Portuguese-speaking country, or have rendered important services.
  • Extraordinary route (15 years): Long-term residents (over 15 years) may naturalize without meeting other conditions.

Special & Provisional Naturalization

  • Spouses/partners of Brazilian diplomatic staff, or long-serving staff themselves, may apply.
  • Children residing in Brazil before age 10 can get provisional citizenship, which can become permanent after reaching adulthood.

2. Application Workflow

  1. Choose your path and prepare documentation (residency proof, language ability, character, etc.).
  2. Submit application in Brazil through the Federal Police.
  3. After review, successful applicants receive Brazilian nationality and can apply for a passport. Government filing is free, though agent fees may apply.
  4. Brazil allows dual citizenship, and naturalized citizens enjoy most rights except specific offices (e.g., president).
