1. What Is a CPF and Why You Need It

The CPF (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas) is Brazil’s tax ID—like an SSN—that’s required for everything from banking to buying property or signing contracts. Whether you’re staying briefly or investing long-term, you’ll need one.

2. How Foreigners Can Obtain a CPF

Via Brazilian Embassy or Consulate (Recommended)

  1. Register via the e-consular system and complete the online application.
  2. Upload required documents (passport, birth certificate), then schedule an in-person appointment.
  3. Present the printed form with a QR code at your appointment. Once approved, you’ll receive a printed CPF number.

In Brazil

Apply in person at a Receita Federal branch, post office (Correios), Banco do Brasil, or Caixa. Submit your passport, fill out the form, and receive your CPF—typically on the same day.

Online/Mail Option

Some regions allow CPF applications by email or online forms (often in Portuguese). Results can be received within days.

3. Important Notes

  • A CPF is unique and lifelong — keep your number safe.
  • It’s essential for banking, contracts, taxes, mobile SIMs, and property purchases.
  • From 2025 onwards, non-resident foreigners must recertify annually to keep their CPF active.
