What Does Dual Citizenship in Australia Mean?

Australia permits dual citizenship, allowing individuals to hold Australian citizenship while retaining another without renouncing their prior nationality. This dual status grants flexibility for global mobility, career opportunities, and legal benefits.

Eligibility & Application Process

  1. Pathways to Citizenship
    • By Birth: Born in Australia with at least one parent who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident secures citizenship automatically.
    • By Descent: Born abroad to an Australian parent qualifies you for citizenship by descent.
    • By Naturalisation: Requires four years of lawful residence (including one year as a permanent resident) and passing the citizenship test.
  2. Fees & Processing
    • From July 2025, the fees are expected to be around A$560–575 for standard citizenship by conferral, and A$360–370 for citizenship by descent.
    • Processing time varies; applicants should refer to official timelines.
  3. Benefits & Legal Constraints
    • Pros: Access to Medicare, voting rights, Australian passport, and social benefits, along with flexibility to reside and work legally.
    • Cons: Dual citizens are ineligible to serve in the federal parliament under section 44.
